No matter how big your bump, your comfort is prioity. For many ladies they are comfortable to be treated reclined back in the chair. In this instance you will be supported with cushions to tilt you slightly onto your left side and a pillow placed under your ‘bump’.

This helps reduces  ‘Supine Hypotension’, which is caused when the main blood vessel returning deoxygenated blood back to the heart becomes constricted from the weight of the uterus. This can result in shortness of breath and feeling faint. By tilting slightly to the left the pressure is alleviated from the vessel, which runs up the right side of the spine.

If you are not comfortable in the reclining chair or have suffered from supine hypotension during pregnancy, the treatment will take place on the sofa, with cushions for support and feet up on a footstool. Either way you will be comfortable, warm and secure as every part of your body becomes relaxed.

“Many thanks Laura, Such wonderful hands! Has been a very relaxing and resting experience”

PRIMING FOR LABOUR

Many ladies first try reflexology at the end of their pregnancy hoping it will encourage labour to start. It was then that I first experienced reflexology, and although my (9lb) baby wasn’t born until a week later I did have a short (4.5 hr ) labour with only gas and air, and a natural delivery.

I tell expectant mothers when they enquire about maternity reflexology to prime for labour, there is no magic button on the foot that I can press that will activate labour. Your baby will come when he/she is ready.

However, when your baby is ready, reflexology can encourage the onset of labour by promoting a deep relaxation and calming the mind. You are far more likely to go into labour in a relaxed state. Reflexology will also provide a boost in energy and help to balance hormones. The treatment focuses on relaxation and stimulation of reflex and acupressure points in the feet.

Research and studies have shown that regular reflexology during pregnancy can lead to shorter labours with less medical intervention.   (Valiani M et al 2010)

In 1993/94 Consultant Obstetrician Dr Gowri Motha’s study on Reflexology on first time pregnant Mums, concluded that those who had received 9 reflexology treatments during pregnancy had shorter labours requiring less pain relief than those who had no reflexology.

Maternity Reflexology to help activate labour is only suitable for ladies who are at full term in their pregnancy. Before you arrive for your treatment I will ask you how your pregnancy has been so far and if they’re are any concerns for you or your baby. If you are booked in for a planned C Section or have a contraindicated medical condition such as placenta praevia then you will not be able to have reflexology at this stage.
